I kept as much as I could of the original Dura Ace components, but I knew that I would replace the wheelset, not wanting to ride on 27 inch 20mm tubulars through downtown Portland. At first, I considered a b conversion as the best option for adapting this bike to my riding style. While possible, this amount of reach is not ideal. There are brake calipers which have enough reach to accomplish the conversion, but they are not in my constellation of desirable components. Instead, I converted it to c, using the existing anodized Dura Ace calipers, which had plenty of reach for a c wheelset. That Peacock Groove bike was a hoot to ride around through the Minneapolis autumn leaves, and I understood what a game changer a bike like that would be for a cyclist who had to endure a midwest winter.
Now I have to admit that neither of these bikes were even close to being the first fat bikes.
Nov 22, · Thanks for having a look at my channel, I wanted to give you an inside of the quality of the work I do on motorcycle frames, and to give powder coats out there some tips when powder coating.
Some bike parts have a date code cast or stamped into the piece. This clearly is when the component was made and not when the bike was made, but unless the component or bike manufacturer had lots of stock lying around in inventory, the date should be a fairly good indication of the year of the bike. At least it would be the earliest date that the bike could have been made. Of course, all this assumes the bike has the original component.
The most likely components to be original are the stem, handlebars, seatpost, and brakes. On a vintage bike in excellent condition that apparently had a lonely existence in a garage all of the components likely are original. As the wear on a vintage bike increases, the greater the likelihood components are not original, either through replacement of worn parts or through component swaps. Swaps can take place early in the life of a bike as the proud new owner upgrades to new or used components of higher quality.
Swaps also can be made as the bike falls out of favor, or is being sold, where the higher quality components are traded for lower quality ones that the owner had onhand.
