Southbank lies in the heart of the state’s arts and culture hub, so you might also like to check out what’s on at the Arts Centre , or perhaps head in on a Sunday for the Sunday Market. Oh, and just for the sake of clarity, Southbank refers both to the suburb of Southbank as well as the strip, whose official name is Southbank Promenade at its western end and Southgate Promenade at its eastern end. The era of encroaching, sinister influence from overseas is presented as a pandemonium of styles and colours, from the antiquated trappings of the boarding house setting to the carnivalesque apparel of its parade of eccentrics and grotesques residing there. As a metaphor for the increasing state surveillance of s Japan, all this falls under the gaze of the mysterious attic occupant, who peeps through the rafters at this perverse environment, before inadvertently finding himself witness to murder.
In his previous film, Hardcore , director Paul Schrader explored the underbelly of the pornographic film world; here he turns his attention to a glossier end of the sex industry, at the same time surveying a suncream-y west-coast malaise in which money, pleasure and power have created a void of genuine feeling. Projected into brothels and shown to young men to educate them in the ins and outs of intercourse, these films, dating from to , are a fascinating insight into sexual attitudes from another era.

But the problem with this is two-fold. Firstly, depending on the type of car, it may take a very long time for values to go up. Jacomb Hood and A. Built on a difficult site at a time when the large shed allowing dispersal of smoke and steam was no longer required with the introduction of electric trains, the emphasis here shifted to the spacious, well-serviced concourse, the beginning in England of the station as a meeting place and a setting for commerce. This steel and glass shed on a concrete base is constructed as a series of intersecting arches, longer on one side than the other, enabling the shed to curve along the very long platform required for Eurostar trains.
After a long period of decline in public transport provision, this station, along with the Jubilee Line, restored faith in the redemptive possibilities of public service architecture. It is regrettable that the future of the terminal is now in doubt following the opening in November of the new high-speed line to St Pancras. Maynard Smith, partly ten and partly twenty-six storeys high, of reinforced concrete with a steelframed tower, all stone faced.
The small windows, designed to light small offices, are not large enough in scale on the outside view to deliver on the promise of such a big building on such a notable site. Westminster Bridge The original stone bridge by Charles Labelye —50 , a much-illustrated wonder of its age, was replaced by the present bridge of —62, designed by Thomas Page. County Hall The building of a new headquarters on a new site for the London County Council, to reflect its status and to accommodate its expanding responsibilities, was a lengthy procedure which involved the acquisition of several tenanted older properties.
The competition for the design was won by Ralph Knott in , and building began four years later but was then interrupted by the First World War. So this fine building, with its grandly sweeping concave colonnade to the riverfront, topped by a peculiarly inconsequential cupola, passed out of public ownership and now accommodates a variety of private commercial enterprises in inappropriately august grandeur.

Larger text size Very large text size What makes a fringe festival fringe? It’s a tricky old term that scoffs at your foolish attempts to define it. It doesn’t mean a minor or second-tier festival — the world’s largest arts festival of any kind is the Edinburgh Fringe, with more than 50, performances across 25 days.
Not quite so gargantuan but still punching above its weight is Melbourne’s own Fringe, which regularly boasts in excess of shows and events. Fringe doesn’t mean experimental, transgressive or avant garde. It doesn’t mean low budget, site specific, political or amateur. All of those things are present in any fringe program, but you’ll also find classic plays done straight, big names trying out new material, slick shows backed by serious money and works that make a mockery of any label at all.
Dancer and choreographer Stephanie Lake’s Colossus. Pippa Samaya Perhaps no fringe show can be quintessentially fringe in the same way no flower can be the floweriest flower. Just as a garden is defined by the range and arrangement of its plants, so too is Melbourne Fringe an environment in which vastly different blooms can flourish.
