Know your wood types Wood furniture falls into three categories: Solid wood furniture is typically more expensive than other types and looks great, but can be susceptible to scratches and water rings.
Veneers have an inexpensive wood base covered by several thin layers of better-quality wood. Because of the cheaper core, veneers aren’t as expensive as solid wood pieces. Cultures and Technologies of Knowledge by Keith M. Murphy Swedish designers are noted for producing distinctive and elegant forms; their furniture and household goods have an especially loyal following around the world. Design in Sweden has more than just an aesthetic component, however. Since at least the late nineteenth century, Swedish politicians and social planners have viewed design as a means for advocating and enacting social change and pushing for a more egalitarian social organization.
In this book, Keith M. Murphy examines the special relationship between politics and design in Sweden, revealing in particular the cultural meanings this relationship holds for Swedish society. Over the course of fourteen months of research in Stockholm and at other sites, Murphy conducted in-depth interviews with various players involved in the Swedish design industry—designers, design instructors, government officials, artists, and curators—and observed several different design collectives in action.
He found that for Swedes design is never socially or politically neutral. Even for common objects like furniture and other household goods, design can be labeled “responsible,” “democratic,” or “ethical”— descriptors that all neatly resonate with the traditional moral tones of Swedish social democracy. Murphy also considers the example of Ikea and its power to politicize perceptions of the everyday world. More broadly, his book serves as a model for an anthropological approach to the study of design practice, one that accounts for the various ways in which order is purposefully and meaningfully imposed by designers on the domains of human life, and the consequences those impositions have on the social worlds in which they are embedded.

I am trying to identify the date of manufacture and any other details that this code may reveal as I am interested in the items background. The piece is engraved: Most Orchids I have found online feature the full signature followed by the piece number and where some end with Iittala such as “Timo Sarpaneva Iittala”.
I have also seen pieces such as candlesticks feature the initials “TS”.

Winter Village Candle Holders Scandinavian Candle Holders The area is known for its unique Scandinavian design furniture with its sleek clean lines and timeless contemporary flair. The design style is mirrored in Scandinavian home accessories including candle holders. However, in certain instances designers create candle holders that may not seem to follow the perceived Scandinavian design criteria. These designers create candle holders from materials such as concrete or iron in designs that are often very Baroque, romantic or whimsical.
Yet each candle holder is a beautiful example of Scandinavian design. Although Scandinavian style home accessories are available in many brick and mortar retail stores such as IKEA, Pottery Barn or Target, the Internet offers shoppers a wide selection of online retailers that carry a vast array of candle holders from Scandinavian designers. Ingebretsen’s In business since , Ingebretsen’s retail store is in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
The store specializes in Scandinavian products and offers an extensive selection of candle holders including works hand crafted by Minnesota potters Lucy and Gene Tokheim. Rated 4 out of 5 by sswanson from Neat Idea, Nice lines Once it was installed I really liked the look of the pop out outlet. THe installation was a tad trickier than the usual standard outlet which is to be expected but I youtubed it and got through it without an electrician. The lines of the outlet and cover are great and the pop out seemes to work well. My only critique is that my different sized plugs don’t all work with it. I needed to plug in an extension cord to run a shop vac where a leak had happened and it didn’t pop out far enough to accomodate.
Sophisticated Design and Three Plugs The Pop-Out outlet provides a modern addition to your walls, avoiding those unsightly traditional outlets.

Attention also had to be paid to traffic and car parking issues as well as the urban fabric. The period when the design was being carried out coincided with a steep increase in the numbers of cars and other motor vehicles on the roads and this can be seen in the basic solution to the problem, drawn up by Aalto. The Plan for Helsinki City Centre was considerably larger in scale than plans for other Finnish cities. As it concerned the capital, the Helsinki plan was also of greater importance to Aalto.
In the design, the main traffic artery coming into Helsinki was located along the existing railway line, with cars driving along an elevated roadway above the tracks.

It is very difficult to pin point the exact year of the change from one form of label to the next. Even though Tom has been able to see many examples of birds nearly between his own collection and our collection, plus dozens more by watching birds that come up for sale in various places , the exact year in some cases remains unknown.
Rather than alter Tom’s wonderful work describing each label, we wish to only add our comments here to help clarify what Tom is saying. For example, when he says that a label was found on birds issued from through , he means only that the bird itself was in production during those years and thus we can narrow the year of introduction of that label down to that time frame. It does not mean that that species of bird ALL had the same label — they may have started with one type of label and remained in production past the year of change over to the next type of label, thus this one species may be seen with different labels.
One of the reasons that pinning these dates down is so difficult is that although Tom has viewed over birds, he has had only a few, at most, of any one species — ours, his, and maybe a couple that have come up for sale that show the label. If, on the other hand, we could come across two birds where one went out of production the year prior to the other coming into production, and they each had different labels, or if we could confirm with someone’s first hand knowledge that a bird purchased in one particular year had this label while another bird purchased the following year had another label, then Tom’s job would be much easier.
Unfortunately, we don’t have that first hand knowledge yet. To compound the difficulty in dating the use of labels, it also may have been that the birds were marketed through different places thus baring two different labels during the same time period.
