The National Security Agency has obtained direct access to the systems of Google, Facebook , Apple and other US internet giants, according to a top secret document obtained by the Guardian. The NSA access is part of a previously undisclosed program called Prism , which allows officials to collect material including search history, the content of emails, file transfers and live chats, the document says. The Guardian has verified the authenticity of the document, a slide PowerPoint presentation — classified as top secret with no distribution to foreign allies — which was apparently used to train intelligence operatives on the capabilities of the program. The document claims “collection directly from the servers” of major US service providers. Although the presentation claims the program is run with the assistance of the companies, all those who responded to a Guardian request for comment on Thursday denied knowledge of any such program. In a statement, Google said: We disclose user data to government in accordance with the law, and we review all such requests carefully. From time to time, people allege that we have created a government ‘back door’ into our systems, but Google does not have a back door for the government to access private user data. They said they would never have been involved in such a program.

Controversy[ edit ] Anthropologist Helen Fisher in What happens in the dating world can reflect larger currents within popular culture. For example, when the book The Rules appeared, it touched off media controversy about how men and women should relate to each other, with different positions taken by columnist Maureen Dowd of The New York Times and British writer Kira Cochrane of The Guardian. Sara McCorquodale suggests that women meeting strangers on dates meet initially in busy public places, share details of upcoming dates with friends or family so they know where they’ll be and who they’ll be with, avoid revealing one’s surname or address, and conducting searches on them on the Internet prior to the date.
Don’t leave drinks unattended; have an exit plan if things go badly; and ask a friend to call you on your cell phone an hour into the date to ask how it’s going. If you explain beautifully, a woman does not look to see whether you are handsome or not — but listens more, so you can win her heart.

However, I’m pretty sure that that at least isn’t entirely true now, since as one of those EMD members waiting “at the starting gate” for the opening of Yahoo’s ymail. Whether or not they may have later begun allowing “duplicated” user names at the domains which they originlly didn’t, I don’t know, but I have long been under the impression that Yahoo is very “sloppy” in their handling of user names — that is, they seem to have been rather poorly organized, or at least inconsistent, with how they’ve handle user names in general.
As one example, after operning one of the accounts at the Ymail domain, when I attempted to create a “dot” name alias for that account — in fact, I believe it was the same firstnameLastname account I referred to above, for which I wanted to create an alias just like my user name except with a “dot” between my first and last names — I received an error message telling me that that name yahoo. But since I’m sure that the name ymail.
So I assumed that they simply wouldn’t allow me to create an alias at any Yahoo domain other than yahoo. But it seems that most of us are in agreement with regard to the original issue here, that opening a Yahoo account at any particular Yahoo domain doesn’t automatically allow one to receive email addressed to the same user name at any other Yahoo domain. And that therefore, most likely, the only way to receive mssages at the same user name with two different Yahoo domains is by being able to open separate accounts at each of the respective domains.
That is, unless one is able to create an alias the same as one’s user name but with a different Yahoo domain, which, hardly ever even looking at any of my Yahoo accounts anymore, I’m not sure whether is possible or not. Last edited by xmailer:
Those in favor of automatically and regularly resetting passwords believe it makes historical password information useless; it forces users to periodically think about security; it increases the likelihood that people will use a password they do not use for other services; and it creates more of a moving target for potential hackers. Hang on, why is it a bad idea again? Or forget the password altogether, forcing service desks to reset them, chewing up time and resources.
Although users are likely to love this new advice, sysadmins are likely to be a little more skeptical — especially as they are the ones who see what sorts of mind-numbingly easy passwords people choose, and the fact that huge numbers of people will use the same one or two passwords for everything from their work system login to Twitter to whatever online form they fill in to win some free gift spoiler: It is inconceivable that an organization trusted with making citizens safer would ever wish to be able to monitor those same citizens.
And, we’d be hard pushed to think of a single time in which GCHQ has not been completely upfront and honest about its activities and its methods.

All Kenneth Schmidgall had wanted was for the thief to return his mobile phone. Schmidgall was a construction worker in San Diego: He had discovered that someone had just stolen his iPhone at a Reggae concert. Our Life Lines The mobile phone has come to represent that which is dearest to us all: It has become our lifeline to those closest to us: We know that if they carry a phone we can better keep tabs on them.
We have doubts about the trustworthiness of our spouses, our girlfriends or boyfriends: If only we can use their mobile phone to monitor their calls, we may consider. The thief believed Schmidgall would never be able to track him down.

Follow The one-time whistleblower, who uses the name Dolores Kane, has been living in the National Trust-owned Hackhurst Farm in Surrey as part of a small new age commune for the past six weeks. But they are set to be removed after a judge agreed to a request for a possession order from the trust on Wednesday. The strong group, who have been occupying the house near the commuter village of Abinger Hammer in the North Downs since late June after being evicted from another empty farmhouse nearby, say they will barricade themselves inside as part of a plan of passive resistance.
In a hearing lasting just four minutes at Guildford County Court Judge Robert Reid QC nodded his ascent to the application which was brought against persons unknown. Glancing along a row of empty seats the judge decided to proceed without Mr Shayler and his fellow squatters, remarking: Speaking outside the farmhouse, about five miles from Guildford, Mr Shayler, barefoot but wearing men’s clothing, said that his right to stay in the property rested on his belief that he is a reincarnation of Jesus Christ.

Herbyr from UK 60 of people found this review helpful Although in theory Gaydar claim to not tolerate inappropriate conduct in its chat rooms, my experience has been that its support team is simply unable to deal with the cyberbullies and trolls who all to often attack people verbally without provocation. As a a former regular user, I have watched a number of individuals verbally abuse individuals and even make threatening remarks. I myself have always sought to uphold the spirit of the website which I think is to bring gay people to gather to chat and cruise.
Unfortunately, I believe despite the fact that some users are decent people, the small minority of cyberbullies put many people off due to their getting away with abuse over and over again. I simply believe the support team is so overwhelmed by these bullies who in turn claim to be the victims themselves that its website is out of control. As an educator, I teach e-safety on a daily basis and feel strongly that a website such as gayer has a social and moral responsibility to actively prevent bullies from flourishing in such environments.

Share this article Share The Bill has encountered stiff opposition, but authorities have been at pains to stress that they’re not seeking unfettered access to the content of emails or recordings of phone calls. Instead, they claim, what they are after is what many have described as ‘outside of the envelope’ information: Who sends a message, where and how it is sent, and who receives it. For example, while the email addresses of senders and recipients would be available to agencies, they would still need to obtain a court order for access to the contents of the emails.
A similar situation would apply in the case of mobile phone calls, with the callers’ identities and locations available to agencies, along with the time of the call and its duration, but agents restricted from listening without authorisation from the courts. Spooks say swift access to communications data is critical to the fight against terrorism and other high-level crimes Critics have said that in effect there is no way to reliably separate such communications data from the content of messages and calls, and that giving easy access to the former would also open the way to access of the latter.
Campaigners also challenged the government over how it could criticise totalitarian regimes overseas which may be using similar systems to crack down on dissent. He explained that this would work as a kind of search engine for everyone’s private data, linking it together from the various online and telecoms accounts people use to communicate. Luckily, there is a range of software for both computers and mobile devices, much of it free, that can encrypt communications to keep it secure.
